When you are tweaking your blog, creating a new CSS rule, or making a new theme, it is not uncommon to break pages that you are not looking. Maybe tables lose their responsiveness, sentences are too close together, empty pages look weird, etc. I’ve written this document to test some common pitfalls that I experienced when I was tweaking my own blog.

Shapes of paragraphs

This is a succession of paragraphs that each contains a short sentence, but not with an extra white line. According to convention, they should be rendered as a single paragraph.

Length of line

One line should contain about 2~3 alphabets³:

Punctuations

Comma, period, question marks and exclamation marks.

Is this a question mark? Yes!

Quotation marks should have the correct orientations:

“Quotations marks ‘rocks’"

Colon, and semicolon:

Here: a colon; which is nothing like a semicolon.

Ellipses should be rendered as one character, instead of 3 dots.

Hyphen and dashes. A hyphen is the shortest, an en dash slightly longer, and an em dash twice as long as an en dash.

Here is an inline image . There isn’t really a good strategy to place an image that is taller than a line inside a sentence, in my opinion. It’s just a wacky form of content allowed by the HTML.

Some Markdown parser will always treat images as an inline element. There’s nothing an SSG or theme maker can do. So this figure is written as raw HTML.
